At approximately 17 to 19 years of age, third molars or wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth. If these come in appropriately aligned, and the gum tissue is healthy, then the wisdom teeth don’t need to be removed. However, this doesn’t always happen. The extraction of wisdom teeth is necessary when they are unable to erupt within the mouth properly, or when the health of the gum tissue is compromised.
